The Journey Within

“The only journey is the one within.”- Rainer Maria Rilke

At some point or another, we have all embarked on that journey – the one that eventually comes back to the self; where we reflect and subtly shift the gaze between the outward and the inward; all the while searching for that one moment where we find ourselves amidst the fog. ‘The Journey Within’ is a narrative of many such journeys.

Featuring the recent works of seven artists, who in their own unique ways, dig deep within their selves and the world around them, ‘The Journey Within’ is a collection of stories and experiments that mark the shifts that the artists have made in their quest for the unknown; the many twists and turns in their paths that have consequently led them to where they are now. The works presented in this rather eclectic examination of the self and beyond, portray singular viewpoints, yet manage to contain within them multiple realities and world of possibilities – all subtly hinting that the journey is in fact the destination.

ANATOMY OF FORKING PATHS

Anatomy of Forking Paths
by ReenaSainiKallat

In the course of his short story ‘The Garden of Forking Paths’, author Jorge Luis Borges puts forward a seemingly simple proposition; what if, in the face of a situation that presents before us multiple options that we need to choose from, we could opt – simultaneously – for all of them, instead of picking one and thereby eliminating the others.

At the crux of such a temporally liberal system is the possibility of diverse strands of futures created in turn by each option chosen, each strand of future irreconcilable with the other and each proliferating and forking, perpetually, toward innumerable futures themselves. Every thread of event thus unraveled would be unlike the other not only in terms of incident but also at the level of essence and import, making them all individually unique in terms of meaning. With regard to creation such a system would translate into the heartening opportunityto embrace the possibilities posed by both, our successesas well as our failures, the trepidations andthe certainties, with equal aplomb. It would render redundant the unremitting struggle to convert ideas into actualities and free us, once and for all, of the constant process of selection, deletion and censoring we must subject our thoughts to in our efforts to realize them.

Unlike Ts’ui Pen’s protagonist in the Borges story we,however, haven’t the freedom to tread downeveryavailable path at a crossroad. The artist’seagernessto fulfill the infinite prospects presented by a work thusrequires a perpetual return to that critical juncture at which paths areopted for and meanings decided upon, with the eternal faith that the passage of time will permittaking up new roads and uncover new meanings.

This collection, excavated out of the last half a decade of ReenaSainiKallat’s practice, is a rumination on time.It is a manifestation of the artist’s meanderings through her own past labours in the hope of rediscovering thedecisive interstices at which choices had formerly been made.It is here that the paths fork, and trails, once denied and discarded, may again be pursued. This revisitationis an attempt to witness the imprints of time on one’s works. But, itis alsoan absorbed effort to recomposemeanings, to injectnew significations and narratives intothem by bringingtogether the outcome of various moments of one’s practice alongside each other. The quiet aspirationof this bid toretrace, to reconfigure,is to cut through the sinews, the skin and the bones of one’s own artistic journeyand uncover, in the process, the secret anatomy of forking paths.

Timeline

Going beyond the unknown

“A journey in search of the self...though the self is too small, the journey never ends”.

For contemporary Indian artist Jayakumar G, the world is inhabited by what falls between the conscious and the subconscious mind. It is where the journey of the self begins, it is where the nuances of life are born, and it is where colour meets the mind in the landscape of the heart.
Born in 1960 in Bangalore, Jayakumar is an alumnus of the Ken School of Art, Bangalore Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and the Royal College of Art, London. He has been an integral part in building Kannada University at Hampi and has been an indelible part of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda. He has also been instrumental in setting up the Department of Visual Arts at Bangalore University, where he currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department.

Studying Jayakumar’s repertoire is like embarking into a world that is vivid in its interpretation and surreal in its appeal. Naked men and women engulfed in worldly chaos, fear and insecurity transcending the human mind, ghoulish symbolism rampant with mummified effigies and the human skull were what defined his early work. It witnessed the artist’s own fears and desires hovering between dream and fantasy. His later works transferred that intensely personal experience into an easily accessible common consciousness.

This is the uncertinity of life that he aspires to convey through his large canvasses that befit the limitless realm of his ideas. What draws us into his world is his dextorous handling of space and colour, and his technique suffused with impressive strokes and luminous colours. His paintings are further enhanced with stylised linear contours, abstracted backgrounds and the use of rhythmical ornamental motifs loosely floating above the picture.

“TIMELINE” is yet another “stop-over” in his destiny path, where he pauses to reflect, ponder, assimilate and learn. No interpreters are required to read Jayakumar’s thoughts and perceptions on canvas, as the artist never overwhelms his audience with crowded visuals. On the contrary, every figure is almost isolated in its space, giving it an iconic sensibility

The exhibition inaugurates on 7th February, 2015 and is on view until 22nd February, 2015
