C DOUGLAS

C DOUGLAS

Born in Kerala, India, 1951; lives and works in Chennai, India

Douglas started his career as a painter at the age of 20 when he travelled to Chennai (then Madras) to enrol himself at the Government College of Arts and Crafts. Douglas' telling of his own artistic journey has a sense of open-endedness. He describes it at different times as a process of 'learning and unlearning', an 'eternal postponement' in finding the meaning of life. In his works, that imbibe all his various experiences – from Kerala to Cholamandal to West Germany and back – he arrives at a universalised figure that approximates both subliminal depths and analysis.
A winner of several accolades and honours, including awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai (1980); Bharat Bhavan Biennale (1990); National Award (Paintings, 1992, 1993) and the Charles Wallace Trust award (1994), Douglas has been a part of numerous solo and group shows across Europe and Asia. Selected individual exhibitions of his works have been displayed at Sri Parvati Gallery, Chennai, 2014; Focus Art Gallery, Chennai, 2012; Ashvitha Gallery, Chennai, 2006; Akar Prakar, Kolkata, 2006; Jehangir Gallery, Mumbai, 2006; Schoo's Gallery, Amsterdam, 1993; European Parent Office Gallery, Munich, 1986; Bayerishes Verines Bank, Garmish, 1983 and Gallery Am Horwath Haus, Murnau, Germany, 1982.

HARISH OJHA

HARISH OJHA

Born in Amethi, India, 1984; lives and works in Lucknow, India

In Harish Ojha's paintings, indigenous nuances are quite apparent. Being brought up in rural India, he still finds himself attached to those Indigenous wooden toys of bright colors (mainly red and green). These invaluable treasures of his childhood are the main motifs of his Paintings. By adding these indigenous elements in his otherwise contemporary idiom, Harish revives folk imagery to merge it with his own individual style. Harish has achieved a synthesis of traditional and modern, a unique perspective wherein his work floats between representational and abstract. Harish began his artistic endeavor in the University of Allahabad with a BFA in Painting and Mural

Harish has been awarded the 58th National Award, New Dehli, 2017 and has participated widely in solo as well as group exhibitions all over India and abroad. R JANARTHANAN

R JANARTHANAN

Born in Chennai, India, 1984; lives and works in Chennai, India

Janarthanan's works explore the idea of the self both at the physical and metaphorical level. While conceptualizing a way to express this preoccupation, it struck to him that the human body is not very different from a bird's nest. A nest is a place where a living creature stays similarly the human body contains the soul that gives sentience to the body. When I observed the form of the nest more closely I found further parallels with the human since both the nest and the human being are built up in layers; layers that are sometimes perceptible to the eyes and at other times not, since the nest/human begin to exist as an idea even before the idea takes a physical form. This idea of physical absence/presence fascinates him and he translates this concept into his work using the notion of a trace.

With a BFA, 2008 and MFA, 2010 from the Government College of Arts, Chennai, Janarthanan has received the Runner up of 'Emerging Artist of the year Award 2015', Bestcollegeart , New Delhi. SARAVANAN PARASURAMAN

SARAVANANA PARASURAMAN

Born in Tamil Nadu, India, 1982; lives and works in Chennai, India

For Saravanan, change is the only unchanging thing, which becomes a recurring theme in his work. He traces the progress of ant holes, mud hills, umbras, penumbras and other transitional/ transformational phenomena, which are guide to the ever changing play of nature, material, form and light. There is both a comfort here with diversity in material and diversity in re-stating experience, which undoubtedly, is the strength of his work. He holds a BFA (2004) and a MFA (2006) from the Government College of Arts, Chennai.

His select solo shows in India and abroad include 2014 “THIS TOO SHALL PASS…” MIAMI BEACH URBAN STUDIO GALLERY, Organized by- College of Architecture and the Arts, Florida International university, Miami, 2012 “WHATEVER HAS HAPPENED, HAS HAPPENED GOOD” Seven Art Ltd, New Delhi. Vijay Pichumani

    VIJAY PICHUMANI
Born in Tamil Nadu, India, 1987; lives and works in Chennai, India
Vijay started his artistic career with a BFA and an MFA from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai. His work is predominantly autobiographical and emerges from the sights he sees in the city and incidents from his personal experiences. Well known for his large wood blocks of owls and crows, his most recent works visualises sound through lines, rendering them a tactile quality that resonates with a collective frequency embedded in our personal narratives. By exploring the space between the lines, his work is at once macro in its vision and micro in its depth.
Having won the Best Outgoing Student Award in printmaking while in college (2009 & 2011), Vijay spent the first few years after graduation studying nature and the elements that are not visible to the naked eye. He we went on to win the Lalit Kala Akademi Scholarship Grant for the year 2012–2013; the Chandra Ilango Art Foundation Award, 2014, and the Arnawaz Vasudev Foundation Award, 2014.
