Going beyond the unknown

“A journey in search of the self...though the self is too small, the journey never ends”.

For contemporary Indian artist Jayakumar G, the world is inhabited by what falls between the conscious and the subconscious mind. It is where the journey of the self begins, it is where the nuances of life are born, and it is where colour meets the mind in the landscape of the heart.
Born in 1960 in Bangalore, Jayakumar is an alumnus of the Ken School of Art, Bangalore Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and the Royal College of Art, London. He has been an integral part in building Kannada University at Hampi and has been an indelible part of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda. He has also been instrumental in setting up the Department of Visual Arts at Bangalore University, where he currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department.

Studying Jayakumar’s repertoire is like embarking into a world that is vivid in its interpretation and surreal in its appeal. Naked men and women engulfed in worldly chaos, fear and insecurity transcending the human mind, ghoulish symbolism rampant with mummified effigies and the human skull were what defined his early work. It witnessed the artist’s own fears and desires hovering between dream and fantasy. His later works transferred that intensely personal experience into an easily accessible common consciousness.

This is the uncertinity of life that he aspires to convey through his large canvasses that befit the limitless realm of his ideas. What draws us into his world is his dextorous handling of space and colour, and his technique suffused with impressive strokes and luminous colours. His paintings are further enhanced with stylised linear contours, abstracted backgrounds and the use of rhythmical ornamental motifs loosely floating above the picture.

“TIMELINE” is yet another “stop-over” in his destiny path, where he pauses to reflect, ponder, assimilate and learn. No interpreters are required to read Jayakumar’s thoughts and perceptions on canvas, as the artist never overwhelms his audience with crowded visuals. On the contrary, every figure is almost isolated in its space, giving it an iconic sensibility

The exhibition inaugurates on 7th February, 2015 and is on view until 22nd February, 2015
