DOT - VIJAY PICHUMANI

For Vijay Pichumani the dot is a signifier of tremendous power and encompasses multiple interpretations. Everything in the universe can be reduced to a dot; it can be the beginning as well as the end, the source of creation and culmination. All encompassing, familiar yet so distant, absorbing and assimilating everything that comes its way, these dots are like portals that lead us on to another portal akin to our own thoughts that stray into unknown alleys and pathways discovering new dimensions that we never knew existed all along or were linked.

Absorbed into this ever-expanding network of portals, the dot seems boundless and infinite. Vijay believes these portals and the journey within them as well as between them reveal themselves to us only when we attempt to seek it or is triggered by the intervention of natural forces. For example the pattern observed during a streak of lightning or the patterns on the parched earth, or even patterns found in the veins of a leaf.

He maps these journeys as a pattern of lines which he says are all around us, often invisible to the naked eye but always tactile to the subconscious mind.
For the most part, our perception and preoccupation with art, its many forms and its extensive significance is irresolute. As every quest into the unfamiliar yields more questions that challenge our preconceived ideas; it makes one wonder if the keys can ever be found at all. Artist Vijay Pichumani found his answers within the elusive concepts that can only be felt; within vibrations and harmonies that travel through our combined consciousness, connecting us in ways that are perhaps beyond our mortal grasps.

It started with this urge to perceive the truth that otherwise evades us – the experiences that traverse beyond the scope of visibility and entice our other senses.
It started when Vijay decided to visualise the sounds we find in nature, rendering them a tactile quality.
It started with a Dot.

A dot that, with each new experience and each new idea, transforms itself into an intrinsic web of lines and patterns which would ultimately serve as road maps for our collective forays into the unknown. As a state of being that represents the beginning and the end of everything, the ‘dot’ holds the key to all that we know and all that we seek – amplifying thoughts and ideas that exist somewhere, just waiting to be found.
